Formalinfabriken, Sickla

  • Together with our client, we started with a run-down factory and ended with a new meeting place and cultural hub. In addition to offices, there are premises for the art organisation Konstjord, a café and a shared public kitchen. Today, the building has become the heart of the new Nobelberget neighbourhood.

  • The Formalin Factory is one of only two surviving buildings on a former industrial site, which for many years was inhabited by experimental cultural activities. In 2018, workshops were organised for all of us involved in the development of Nobelberget. The transformation into a residential area began with the ambition to preserve the cultural and innovative power of the area. During the process, an idea emerged of Formalinfabriken as a new meeting place for co-creation, with studios, workspaces and gathering places.

  • New communication routes are established between the two entrance levels, connecting them to a core in the old distillery tower containing staircase, lift and services. From the café on the lower level, the core is reached via a new staircase.

  • Throughout the building we have reused bricks, floor tiles and other building materials to minimise the use of resources and maintain the character of the building.
